Being in a band

by Lachie Strummer - 16:56 on 15 January 2009

Did I ever tell you of my days in a ceilidh band? No?
Ach well, here goes.
It was over twenty years ago and I was one of four strolling (and occasionally staggering) minstrels.  Our line-up consisted of Accordion, Fiddle, Tin Whistle and Guitar. We must have played every hall from Acharacle to Achiltibuie.
I recall one particular gig in Poolewe, the crowd in a real frenzy, when the young ones near the stage started throwing their undergarments at us, a la Tom Jones. Had they been female it would have been so much nicer.
To be honest we found long term success quite elusive. As the late Groucho Marx once said ‘We started with nothing and ended up in extreme poverty’.
Ah, the joy of being in a band.
