Feasibility Study into affordable house sites to go ahead 14 November 2008 A feasibility study will soon be commissioned by Highland Small Communities Housing Trust into land identified by Camuscross Grazings Committee and Camuscross Community Steering Group on the hill grazings. The piece of land has been cut off from the rest of the hill grazings by the new road, but is close to services. It also hoped that the old road will be able to be used as an access road, which would help to keep potential house sites affordable. The feasibility study is being funded by a grant from the Highland Housing Alliance Trust following a successful application by HSCHT. The feasibility study will establish the suitability of the site near Brae Ord for housing and the likely expense of putting in services to the house sites. It is expected to take up to six months to complete the study. 02 It's Your Community Grant for Community Tent 14 November 2008 The village will soon have its own community tent after Camuscross Community Steering Group submitted a successful application to 02's It's Your Community grant. Committee members scoured the countryside looking for tents, marquees and gazebos they could borrow for the highly successful Crofters Olympics in August. Now they will be able to organise outdoor events whenever they like, without having to call on people's generosity - and will also be able to hire the tent out to other organisations and businesses. With the £1,000 grant and some of their own funds, the group will be able to buy an ex-army marquee. The first event they plan is a party to celebrate winning the award! New Year Dance 09 November 2008 The Steering Group are planning a dance in the Talla Duisdale on Friday 2nd January. Music will be by a band called 'The Camerons are Coming'. The next newsletter, An Lianag, will contain full details.
Camuscross Wins Woodward Challenge Cup 28 August 2008 In a gripping competition against five other villages from South Skye, Camuscross was the worthy winners of the Woodward Challenge Cup in the Tug of War competition at the Crofting Olympics on Saturday 23rd August. In a competition featuring strong teams from Duisdale, Breakish, Tarskavaig, Ardvasar and Kilmore, the Camuscross team didn't lose a single pull, and had to pull a back-breaking 7 pulls to win the competition. The cup was last presented in 1937, when Isle Ornsay won the tug of war at what was then the South Skye Highland Games. It is assumed that the games then stopped because of the second world war and the cup next turned up in a bin in Inverness. The binman who found it in the 1970s returned it to Isle Ornsay, where it has sat in the bar until the momentous moment on Saturday when the Camuscross team rightfully re-claimed it with their show of strength. The team were: Calum MacDonald, Joel Franklyn, John MacDonald, Gordon Brown, David Campbell, Graeme MacKenzie, Malcolm Parsons. |
