Local food

The crofters and gardeners of Camuscross are growing more food and keeping more animals than any time since a fair old while ago.

There are now 17 cattle beasts on the hill, including 5 Highlanders, five crofters keep sheep, including a herd of Hebridean sheep, a number have pigs and five keep hens.  2006 was the bumper year for pigs, with 14 in the village - people are still eating the sausages from that year!

An increasing number of crofters and gardeners are growing crops: in 2008 there are tattie patches on 9 crofts and there are more vegetables growing in gardens.  Is this happening throughout the Highlands and islands, or is Camuscross ahead of the game?  Perhaps the distance from the nearest shop encourages us to produce more of our own food?

Whatever the reason, growing your own food is very satisfying - they not only taste tons better, but the food miles are nil.
