EVENTS

Since it started in February 2007, Camuscross Community Steering Group has organised a number of very successful community events.  These are:

2007

March  Stovies Supper & Ceilidh - stovies cooked by community members, home made oatcakes, luscious puddings, performances by some young village stars on accordion and fiddle and Highland dancing, then dancing to the village band, ending up with songs

April  Falasgeir or Muirburn  - organised by the Common Grazings Committee.  A team of people all joined together to control the burning of heather on Ard Ghunel, to improve the quality of the grazing and clear a way for the new woodland regeneration fence.  That part of the hill has not been grazed for many years.

August  Camuscross Boat Day - launch of the 80 year old rebuilt Orkney skiff; Come-and-try kayaking with Gordon Brown; speeches, songs, blessing of the boat by Rev John Urquhart; massed sail of watercraft from Camuscross to Isle Ornsay harbour; whisky tasting provided by Praban na Linne; barbeque; dance with Fergie MacDonald

2008

January  - New Year's Dance ceilidh in the Duisdale Hall with young and not so young performers, then dance with Fergie MacDonald

March - Camuscross Open Day - community consultation to find out what you all think about what we've been up to!  Displays of information on community shops, visits to other community developments, paths and interpretation; also history displays of maps, papers, postcards, photos and objects.  People filled in questionnaires to say what they thought of proposals.

COMING SOON!

July - Paths & History Day is being planned - we hope to take a walk to the most interesting historical sites in the village, with short talks and information about history, place names and local songs.  Then we'll convene to an inside location for a planning session on the sorts of stories we want to tell with our paths interpretation - using maps, photos, post-its, helped along by cups of tea and cakes!

23rd August - we're planning a big community event to build on the success of the Boat Day.  If you've got any good ideas or would like to help, please get in touch!

Camuscross Highland Games in the middle of the 1900s, on the old Games Field, looking out towards Isle Ornsay and the lighthouse almost visible on the right.  How about reviving it?
