Community Shops
Hello,
I was trying to find an email contact for the Appin Shop when I came across you.
I have worked for ViRSA and Action in rural Sussex supporting the creation and running of Commnity Shops.I believe that they are the future for most villages. I wish you every success.
In April I moved to Vancouver for a year (babysitting) which gave me time to set up a Community Shops Email Forum which is working very well. Whatever question you have there is probably someone amongst the 150 shops that have "done it."
It costs you nothing to become art of it and it may help you.I run it all myself. There is no advertising and your contact details are not passed on.
I have now started a monthly newsletter, happy to send you a copy.
My wife and I ran a village shop and post office for 15 years.

Renewable Energy
I read with great interest te Renewables section of your website. On 13th August. I will be coming to visit the site of a friend who will be building there as I will be drilling the boreholes for His geothermal heating system and water well. If we can be of any help to the community regarding renewables please get in touch. Regards. Jim. 07740983280.

Great site!
What a great site! I found it while I was looking for things to do when we are on holiday in Skye next month. What a great place Camuscross sounds like. I did not know people did things together like that any more. It sounds like the stories my father told me of growing up in a wee village in Argyll 70 years ago. Good luck with all your plans,

Katherine

Cngratulations on site updated to 2009 02 04. Contents make me homesick while here in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates 3000km away
Is there a reason why The Initiative does not embrace the Isleornsay area including Duisdale Beag and Disdale Mor which were key areas of the west coast with scheduled shipping service from Glasgow and nearly a railway to Broadford?
I lived at No 3 and No21 Camuscross and with the Frasers at Duisdale Beag, attended Duisdale Public School (in bare feet + peat!), was telegraph boy from Brae Ord to Drumfearn & Kinloch, attended Sunday School at the Missionary's house and even rowed with the Policeman's son to Sandaig in the Policeman's Boat. Interested to read about An Lairag on my late Mother's Croft on which we planted the trees to preserve it from traffic parking. I had my boat there for mackarel and dreamt of doing so much before being sent to Bulgaria as a United Nations Consultant.
Here is a question for the Historical Group:
Boswell who toured the Highlands with Dr Johnson in 1773 On Sunday Sep 05 wrote 'I walked to the parish church of Slate'(Kilmore?)...'There are no church bells in the Island' and later on Wed 1773 09 29 'After a very good sleep, I rose more refreshed than I had been for some nights'....'Col. who had gone yesterday to pay a visit at Camuscross, joined us this morning at breakfast' Question; which house did he visit in Camuscross? ie before the William Nicol sailed in 1837 and the Sillery 0n 1853 03 07.
Slainte, Alister
PS we have out Ceilidhs here. Isabel was Chieftain of the Scottish St Andrew's Society for four years. We both look forward to the 'Homecoming' & work to do.
